Harmonized System Code

Harmonised System (HS) codes are based on goods descriptions. They’re used throughout the world to classify international shipments and assess which taxes, duties and restrictions may apply. HS codes are six digits long, although some countries add extra numbers to the end for further classification. (Like Japan, Germany and the US.)

HS code stands for Harmonized System code. These codes are used by customs worldwide, so that customs know what kind of products are in the package. This allows customs to determine how much import duties or other import taxes they have to charge.

When making a shipment to countries outside the European customs union, this code must be indicated on the forms in the shipment. You can usually request your supplier for the correct HS code of a product.
